Regional Transport Office

In India, the Motor Vehicles Department was founded under section 213(1) of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. It is a central act which is applicable throughout the country. Motor vehicle department is responsible for enforcing several provisions of this act. This department is headed by the Transport Commissioner.

You must be aware of that every state and city has its own RTO or Regional Transport Office. Every R.T.O is responsible to carry out the functions and activities that are laid out in Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.

Functions - Regional Transport Office (R.T.O)

Take care of provisions realted to various acts of Motor Vehicles, the central motor vehicles rules and the state motor vehicles rules which was introduced by the government from time to time.

  1. Ensure co-ordinated development of road transport through management of permit.
  2. Collect tax as per the provisions of the vehicles act .

Activities performed by RTO

  1. Registration of vehicles
  2. Motor vehicle tax collection
  3. Provide licenses for public transit and freight traffic
  4. Take driving test and issue Learner's and Permanent driver's license and took the charge of renewing the same
  5. Take care of all databases realted to the registered vehicles
  6. Vehicle transfer and registration of mortgage transactions
  7. Keep a proper check on the validity of Insurance on motor vehicles
  8. Mechanical inspection of accidental vehicles
  9. Grant certificate of fitness to transport vehicles
  10. Provide badges to the drivers of public services vehicles like Auto rickshaws and Taxis
  11. Provide International driving permits
