LIC Health Shield (Plan 907)
LIC Health Shield is a family health plan that pays fixed cash for hospital stays, surgeries, and day-care procedures. Each benefit is calculated based on the daily benefit you choose, between ₹2,500 and ₹10,000 per day (in multiples of ₹500). Premiums stay the same for all 15 years.
Benefits of LIC Health Shield
| Benefit | What LIC pays |
|---|---|
| Hospital Cash (general ward) | 1x daily benefit per day (for stays over 24 hours) |
| Hospital Cash (ICU) | 2x daily benefit per day |
| Major Surgical Benefit | 20%–100% of 100x daily benefit for 263 listed surgeries |
| Day-Care Procedure | 5x daily benefit for 243 listed procedures |
| Other Surgical Benefit | 2.5x daily benefit per day for unlisted surgeries |
| Medical Management | 2.5x daily benefit for dengue, malaria, pneumonia, TB, or hepatitis A |
| Extended Hospitalisation | 10x daily benefit if a single stay exceeds 30 days |
| Health Check-up | Up to half the daily benefit, once every three years |
| Ambulance | ₹1,000 with a major surgery claim |
Extra features worth knowing
- No Claim Benefit: Your daily benefit grows by 10% of the initial amount after every three claim-free years.
- Premium waiver on major surgery: One year's premium is waived for the entire family after a Category 1 or 2 surgery.
- Auto Health Cover: If the Principal Insured dies, all future premiums are waived, and the family remains covered.
- Quick Cash: 50% of the major surgery payout can be paid in advance while you are still in the hospital.
- Restoration: If the major surgery limit is exhausted in a year, one more surgery in a different body system is still covered.
- Riders: Add LIC's New Term Assurance Rider or Accident Benefit Rider for additional protection.
LIC New Cancer Cover (Plan 908)
LIC New Cancer Cover pays a lump sum upon diagnosis of cancer, plus a monthly income if the cancer is at a major stage. The Sum Assured ranges from ₹15 lakh to ₹50 lakh, depending on your age at entry.
Benefits of LIC New Cancer Cover
| Cancer stage | What LIC pays |
|---|---|
| Early stage cancer | 25% of Sum Assured + premiums waived for the next three years |
| Major stage cancer | 100% of Sum Assured (even if an early-stage claim was paid) + 1% of Sum Assured every month for 10 years + all future premiums waived |
The total payout can go up to 245% of the Sum Assured. The monthly income continues to your nominee even if you pass away during the 10-year period.
Two benefit options
- Option I – Level Sum Assured: Your cover remains the same throughout the term.
- Option II – Increasing Sum Assured: Your cover increases by 10% of the basic Sum Assured on each of the first five policy anniversaries, up to 150%.
Minimum Sum Assured by age
| Age at entry | Minimum Sum Assured |
|---|---|
| 18–34 years | ₹35 lakh |
| 35–40 years | ₹30 lakh |
| 41–50 years | ₹20 lakh |
| 51–65 years | ₹15 lakh |
The maximum is ₹50 lakh across all your New Cancer Cover policies.
How Much Will LIC Actually Pay? (Examples)
Fixed-benefit plans are easiest to understand with numbers. Here are three common scenarios.
Example 1: Heart bypass under Health Shield. Rahul, 45, has a daily benefit of ₹5,000. He undergoes CABG (a Category 1 surgery) and stays for 7 days, two of them in ICU.
| Benefit | Calculation | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Major Surgical Benefit | 100% of ₹5 lakh (100 × ₹5,000) | ₹5,00,000 |
| Hospital Cash (ICU) | 2 days × ₹10,000 | ₹20,000 |
| Hospital Cash (ward) | 5 days × ₹5,000 | ₹25,000 |
| Ambulance | Flat | ₹1,000 |
| Total payout | ₹5,46,000 |
On top of this, the next year's premium is waived for the entire family.
Example 2: Dengue under Health Shield. Rahul's daughter is hospitalised for four days with dengue. LIC pays ₹12,500 (2.5 × ₹5,000) as Medical Management Benefit plus ₹20,000 hospital cash, a total of ₹32,500.
Example 3: Cancer under New Cancer Cover. Priya, 45, has a Sum Assured of ₹20 lakh (Level option).
| Event | What LIC pays |
|---|---|
| Early stage cancer diagnosed in year 4 | ₹5 lakh + 3 years of premiums waived |
| Major stage cancer diagnosed in year 8 | ₹20 lakh lump sum |
| Monthly income for 10 years | ₹20,000 × 120 months = ₹24 lakh |
| Total payout | ₹49 lakh (245% of Sum Assured) |
Payouts are fixed, so you receive these amounts even if your actual hospital bill is lower or higher.

How to Claim LIC Health Insurance
- Inform LIC's health TPA, Healthindia Insurance TPA Services, at 8976923091 (for senior citizens: 8976923092).
- Pay the hospital directly, as LIC health plans do not offer cashless facilities.
- Submit the claim form, discharge summary, bills, and medical reports. For cancer claims, include the histopathology report.
- LIC pays the fixed benefit to your bank account upon approval.
LIC Health Insurance vs Regular Health Insurance
LIC's plans are not a replacement for a mediclaim policy. They work best as a second layer of protection.
| Basis | LIC Health Insurance | Regular Health Insurance (Mediclaim) |
|---|---|---|
| How it pays | Fixed amount, regardless of the bill | Actual hospital bill, up to the sum insured |
| Cashless treatment | Not available | Available at network hospitals |
| Pre/post hospitalisation | Not covered | Usually covered |
| Premium | Fixed for 10–15 years | Increases with age at renewal |
| Use of money | Any purpose (e.g., income loss, travel, home care) | Only for medical bills |
| Policy term | 10–15 years | 1–3 years, renewable |
In Example 1 above, if the bypass bill came to ₹8 lakh (an illustrative figure), there would still be a ₹2.5 lakh gap even after LIC's ₹5.46 lakh payout. A regular health plan would cover the bill, while LIC's payout could cover income loss and recovery costs.
Who Should Buy LIC Health Insurance?
- Families who already have a mediclaim and want extra cash for non-medical costs during hospitalisation
- People with a family history of cancer who want a large lump sum plus monthly income (New Cancer Cover)
- Sole earners, as Auto Health Cover keeps the family's policy running if the Principal Insured dies
- Buyers who want fixed premiums for the long term instead of yearly hikes
Skip it if: you don't have a regular health insurance plan yet. Buy a comprehensive health plan first, then add LIC's plan on top.
Conclusion
LIC's return to health insurance gives buyers two solid fixed-benefit options: Health Shield for family hospital and surgery cash, and New Cancer Cover for a large cancer payout with income support. Both offer guaranteed premiums and the trust of India's largest life insurer. Pair either plan with a comprehensive health insurance policy for complete protection. Need help choosing?
